Guide: Included and Premium Wi-Fi on Virgin Voyages
Are you planning on sailing with Virgin Voyages? Here's everything you need to know about the Wi-Fi offerings on board. We'll start right away with the good news: no need to pay extra, the basics are already included in your fare.
The plans
Basic Wi-Fi is always included
Virgin Voyages always includes basic Wi-Fi in your fare. This package is totally fine for casual internet browsing, light work, and getting in touch with friends and family back home. But there's an important restriction in the basic plan: you can't stream video, and audio streaming is limited.
The basic plan will let you connect up to two devices.
What's included in the premium Wi-Fi package?
If you want to upgrade, premium Wi-Fi plans are available. These plans will unlock streaming (video, full quality audio, VoIP calls).
The premium package costs $30 per day, and whole-cruise passes are available at a discounted rate of about $20 per day.
You can purchase the plan onboard the ship via the Virgin Voyages Sailor App on your phone.
Premium WiFi is also included for free in some cases:
- For sailors in a Mega Rockstar Suite
- For sailors who have earned their Deep Blue Extras in the loyalty program
- For sailors sailing with a Scarlet Summer Pass
FAQs
How many devices can you connect?
You can connect up to 2 devices per passenger. You can switch devices as needed, and, if you want, you can add a third device for only $5.
Is there a data limit?
All on-board WiFi plans are unlimited. That means there is no data cap. The only restriction is whether or not you can stream content and how many devices you can connect.
Having said that, don't go too crazy: if you take up too much bandwidth, Virgin may still opt to boot you off the network to keep it functional for other sailors.
How fast is the Wi-Fi connection?
There is no straight answer to this question. Because onboard Wi-Fi uses a satellite connection, there are many factors that can affect speed and latency. This includes things like weather, location and network congestion. Your actual speed may vary throughout the cruise.
Can you use VPNs?
VPNs should work, and there are no restrictions in place that prevent them from working. There are two things to note when using a VPN onboard:
- Officially, Virgin Voyages does not support VPNs. So there is no guarantuee in place.
- The Sailor app will likely not work while you are connected to a VPN.
2024 Update: Upgraded Wi-Fi
On February 26th, SES announced that Virgin Voyages would be upgrading their connectivity with SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink PRO:
Combining Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite coverage, the SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink PRO service will provide unmatched connectivity of up to 1.5Gbps per ship, enabling Virgin Voyages’ sailors to enjoy exclusive passenger experiences.
These upgrades are being rolled out across the entire fleet of Lady Ships.
